Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) ist draußen

Und rockt die Bude!

Ich selber hab ja schon seit dem Wochende den Release Candidate am laufen. Heute habe ich mir dann die ISO gesaugt, gebrannt und bin ab zu einem Freund zum installieren und ich glaube das war die schnellste und unkomplizierteste Linux Installation die ich erlebt hab.

Also für alle die Linux schon immer mal ausprobieren wollten aber es sich bis jetzt nicht getraut haben: Die neue Ubuntu Version ist ein guter Anlass 😉

Ubuntu Hardy Heron RC installiert

Am Wochenende musst ich einfach auf das die Release Candidate Version von Ubuntu Hardy Heron (8.04) aktualisieren. Der Aktualisierungs Vorgang (update-manager -d) ging ohne größere P

robleme über die Bühne, hat zwar am Ende eine Fehlermeldung ausgegeben wegen irgendeinem Paket, w

ahrscheinlich ein Selbstgebautes womit es dann irgendwelche Dopplungen gab, aber ich konnte ins System booten und er hat mir dort auch keine Fehler von der Aktualisierung angezeigt. Lediglich die Zeichendarstellung von der Tastatur hat in Gnome herumgesponnen, es hat nur noch kyrillische Zeichen ausgespuckt. Nach dem ich die deutsche Tastaturbelegung in den Tastatur-Einstellungen deaktiviert und wieder aktiviert hatte (oder gelöscht und

neu erstellt hatte) funktionierte alles wieder wie bisher.

Im großen und ganzen gefällt mir Hardy Heron ziemlich gut. Ich hoffe das ich mit dieser Ubuntu Version noch ein paar Menschen mehr zum Umstieg oder zumindest zur Installation bewegen kann.

Hier nun meine pros und contras, ich denke ich werde die Liste erweitern und Lösungen für Probleme hinzufügen.

(+) daumen hoch für:

• Überspringbare Festplattenchecks beim Boot-Vorgang. Das war früher immer besonders peinlich wenn man gerade eine Präsentation oder ähnliches machen wollte.
• ATI-Treiber die Compositing mitbringen und womit auch der “Ruhezustand” endlich funktioniert.
• Gnome 2.22 insgesamt. Ich mag die Metacity-Effekte, das neue Clearlooks, die neuen Funktionen für Totem (u.a. YouTube Plugin)
• Inkscape 0.46, insbesondere für die PDF-Bearbeitungsfunktion.
• PulseAudio: Die Möglichkeit die SoundStreams einzelner Programme zu bearbeiten finde ich nützlich und war bitter nötig.
• Firefox 3: Sieht insgesamt deutlich schöner als sein Vorgänger aus und passt sicher deutlich besser in die Desktop-Umgebung ein. Die überarbeitet Lesezeichenfunktion sieht gut aus, muss ich aber noch ausprobieren.

(-) daumen runter für:

• PulseAudio; Sound ist manchmal einfach weg, funktioniert nicht mit Firefox.
  • Lösung: Das Packet libflashsupport installieren, damit Flash mit PulseAudio kommunizieren kann.
• Nicht Übersetzte Strings, z.B. in F-Spot (hier vorallem peinlich bei Begriffe wie “File” und “Edit”)
• Immernoch sehr mangelhafte Integration von Tracker in Nautilus
• Gnome Do funktioniert nicht so recht wie ich will, es öffnet zum Beispiel nicht jedes Programm wie es sollte.

WordPress Bug: Erstellen von Kategorien nicht mehr möglich

Wenn mensch mit WordPress keine neuen Kategorien erstellen kann und einfach nichts passiert wenn mensch auf den “Kategorie erstellen”-Button klickt, schaltet einfach JavaScript ab, dann gehts wieder.

Endlich klappt Miro auch bei mir

Bald gibts Version 1.0 bzw. 0.9.9.9 von Miro, meinem lieblings Videocasts Angucker. Miro wollte unter gutsy bis jetzt nicht so recht ich hatte es auch schon fast aufgegeben. Mein Problem war das Miro sofort abstürzte (mit einem ominösen BadMatch Error) sobald ich ein Video schauen wollte. Das Problem lag offensichtlich an xine. Deshalb einfach Miro auf gestreamer umstellen und fertig.

Howto: Enable Tagging in Ubuntu Gutsy in 4 simple steps

Today marks the release of Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon. One brand new feature of gutsy is that tracker, a desktop indexer like google dektop, runs by default. Tracker also supports taxonomy for your files and folders but this feature is not yet integrated into gnome. But wait…you can have it anyway in a few simple steps:

1. Install python-nautilus package:

sudo aptitude install python-nautilus

2. Download “Tags-Tab”-Extension and move it to .nautilus/python-extensions (you may have to creat this folder)
3. Restart Nautilus:
   Alt+F2 and type in killall nautilus
   Now you can start tagging files and folders. Simply right-click on the item you want to tag, go to the “Tag”-tap and insert your tags.
4. Setup Searchfolders
   In order to have your tagged items on your hand when ever you need them, simply go to nautilus click on the search button and type:
   tag:[tagname]
   Then go to File->Save search…

Voila, now you can start reorganizing your desktop with tags. I “implemented” some sort of GTD-System with a “next”-tag for files I want to work on in the next days.

extensions directory executable.

deutschsprachiges AnarchistInnen Metablog kommt!

Hatte gerade ein kurzes Gespräch mit evan darüber das ich es toll fände wenn es ein deutschsprachiges Anarchoblogs gäbe und da hat er mir einfach Angebot ich solle mal ein paar Blogs, Design sowie ein Name startklar machen und dann ginge das klar und wird auf protest.net gehostet 🙂

Also wenn du ein schön anarchistisches Blog kennst oder einE AnarchistIn bist du Blogs dann schreib mir doch bitte ein Kommentar damit dein Blog auch da rein kommt. Und wenn jemensch ein Design Vorschlag hat oder mir dabei helfen mag nur zu. Ein richtiger name fehlt auch noch, deutschsprachiges Anarchoblogs ist ja wohl etwas lahm.

Mugshotting

Yesterday prometoys invited me to Mugshot a web 2.0 thingy I just heard a few words ago on Planet Gnome when it still looked very beta. So what is Mugshot? Mugshot basicly could be descibed as a mix of group-chats, last.fm, del.icio.us and myspace but I like it mutch more because its free software and it brings you all new things that get posted right on to your desktop, you need to install the mugshot client in order for mugshot to work right.

So what exactly can you do with it? First you have some sort of profile where you can add alot of external services that are syndicated into your mugshot and your friends see all updates on these external services on their stacker a list of items that pops on to your desktop when ever something new comes in. You can creat or follow groups and post web links to these groups or individual so these pop up and you can even talk about these pages. Every group also got a own chat room. I can’t explain Mugshot fully yet Iam really new to it but I think I like it and its something interesting to kepp watching. So go on, register and download the client. And don’t forget to join the Anarchists Group 😉

I had some problems with firefox and mugshot chatting because firefox didn’t knew what to do with the mugshot protocol the solution is quiet easy. I had some help over here. You simply point firefox to about:config right click and select new String which should have the name network.protocol-handler.app.mugshot and the value /usr/bin/mugshot-uri-handler.
If you use amarok (as I do) you need to install the Mugshot Plugin if you want your Music Radar to work.

Update: What I still miss on Mugshot is that I would like to set prioritize for stacker pop ups, for example I want to see all posts by my friends but not from the GNOMErs Group, but I don’t want to leave the group either I guess you can do this already by selecting hush on items in the stacker.
